Voice recognition software is one of those things you either love or you hate. Most people I know hate it, I however, have always loved it.  I can only speak from my experience using Nuance’s Dragon Naturally Speaking.

I began using dragon, in it’s previous form: Dragon Dictate in something like 1996 and right away  I took to it like a duck takes to water. I was fascinated by the notion that my voice could be a tool. a personal assistant that never would argue, perhaps disagree but never argue with what I had asked them to write down on my behalf.  I loved that dragon could keep up with me; well now it can. the naturally speaking line allows for continuous speech. when it was dragon dictate the user had to pause in between each word to allow the computer to keep up with spoken word.

Problems you may meet

Although the continuous speech of today’s versions allows for faster production of text documents, it does offer some users some issues that I plan to outline.phrasing can be an issue, if you don’t speak continuously dragon finds it difficult to understand you.

The reason for this post

this post was written for a twitter user who asked why they may be having issues getting started with dragon I hope this answers some of your beginner user questions?

Do you have any questions you would like to ask me?

  1. How does the software do with capitalization? As we all know, capitalizing letters is terribly important—it can make the all the difference.

    Picture these two sentences:

I helped my Uncle Jack off his horse.

I helped my uncle jack off his horse.

Capitalization! It’s the difference between being a helpful niece or nephew, and being a complicit pervert!!!

Can the software accomodate it? How difficult is it to capitalize appropriately? What do you need to say to make it happen? And what about other punctuation, like our friend the period, the question mark, and of course, quotations!

    Thanks in advance!

  2. it uses natural language there is a demo of me using it linked to on my blog look on the related posts if you can’t find it let me know and I will dig it up its from last year or the yr before
