Hello all,
As I was sitting in the dentist chair today I got thinking about cerebral palsy and the dentist. A number of things occurred to me. Cerebral palsy is about tight muscles and in all my years of going to the dentist it wasn’t until today that I realized something.
One’s tongue is a muscle and I have spent a lifetime wondering why the hygienist fights with my tongue for the entire appointment. It hit me today like a lightning bolt or as Oprah would call it an aha moment my tongue is like every other muscle in my body, although I am not entirely sure if this is true it would make sense, therefore that my tongue too is somewhat affected and thus the hygienist has to work with or in some cases against it to get my teeth clean.
I hope you enjoyed this article – whether you agree with everything or not, send me your comments. opinions, suggestions and experiences – your input is very welcomed and much appreciated!

Wow! What insight! With me it’s my nerves that are effected but, of course the tongue has those too. Before I had the stroke, going to the dentist was easy. Since my stroke, I loathe it. It isn’t anything that the dentist does. He’s a nice guy. Now I know. It’s because I am working harder to keep my tongue under control for appointment.

I’ve always known my tongue was the problem. I have the opposite, I have hypotonia (not nearly as bad as when I was a kid but still). When I lay back my tongue falls to the back of my throat and cuts of my air supply.
I avoid the dentist like the plague.
awesome not, so does that impact your sleep too then Jen

Interesting observation. You should ask your doctor about it next time you see him, get an idea if your observation is factually correct. I know it does make sense!
Zachary I just might
Just ‘stumbled’ upon your blog. Like your ‘moto’ of ‘removing the fence around social barriers one post at a time’

You are lucky to find a dentist, my son is disabled and stockport pct call two gaps of ten years and four years regular checks. have had to resort to plax pre brush which does work for calculus by the way and can be bought on amaz\on and a nifty little tool for scraping also from amazon.
Hi susan thanks for your comment, interesting!
