Having a disability can be a socially isolating thing but I personally found it a struggle in my teen years. Teens are so socially awkward to begin with that I found a few things useful to realize. People are especially uncomfortable with things they don’t understand. In my case they didn’t understand why one of their peers who appeared healthy was in a wheelchair. That or it went to the other extreme and they assumed I had a cognitive disability and would talk around me and not to me.
How I overcome my socially awkward teen years
Looking back I always had a friend or two. When I was in high school I always had a close friend or two. I opted to go to a high school that the peers I had grown up with didn’t go to. This was because there were more resources available to me there. The people I hung out with after school and on weekends were people who had grown up with me from the time in elementary school.
