is cerebral palsy contagious or not

In this post I answer the question is cerebral palsy contagious that I get asked all the time. The question actually kind of makes me sad from a social perspective to think that people worry that cerebral palsy is contagious. I grew up often feeling and or being socially isolated from my peers and as I am writing this I am wondering if my peers worried without my knowledge that cerebral palsy is contagious, because the simple answer is that no cerebral palsy is not contagious.

I worry about where the notion that is cerebral palsy contagious came from? I suspect as with a lot from our society, it comes from a lack of education about the topic. But this attitudinal thinking is cerebral palsy contagious makes me worry for the social implications for people with cerebral palsy.

As I have written numerous times here about my experience with social isolation but the cause of it has never crossed my mind; in fact I think there are a number of causes but that the main one is a lack of education and therefore it makes the kids with it have low self-esteem or at least that that is my fear all from a lack of education on the part of society

Childhood and adolescence is hard enough when you have a disability like cerebral palsy because it makes you different but then when you add a barrier like society not understanding what cerebral palsy is it makes it that much harder.

part of the reason I started this blog in 2009 was to be the voice for those younger then me living with cerebral palsy I started it because I didn’t find my story represented online. I want to debunk myths like is cerebral palsy contagious, think about it if society did just that what would happen?

I can’t help but ask myself if the barriers to employment faced by folks with disabilities stem from attitudinal barriers and myths like the one I am talking about today: is cerebral palsy contagious. If people like you and I work together to break down this lack of knowledge and work toward a common understanding about disability I think the world would be a better place.

I am seriously beginning to think that a lot of employment issues and other social issues would be greatly reduced if people had a clear understanding of things.

About lifeofthedifferentlyabled

Laura Forde founded her blog through my eyes: my life with cerebral palsy in December 2009 out of a great need she had, realizing that there was a vast gap in firsthand accounts of what life was like living with Cerebral Palsy: she knew then that the only way to see this reflected online was to create the change herself and thus this blog was born Laura was born four months premature, weighing a mere one pound three ounces and given ten percent odds for survival. She was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three. After graduating from college, she continued writing and doing what she loves to do most; speaking to groups about her life experiences and sharing what she has learned from her journey. Her blog lifeofthedifferentlyabled was created after discovering that the online community lacked the voice of people in her situation. In its first year, the site saw over 20,000 hits from all over the world. Her readers are from all walks of life; some with disabilities, parents of children, professionals, and others who seek to gain a better understanding of the world of the differently abled. 1. I was asked this question a LOT as a kid. I added a scene dealing with this misconception to my film here http://cripvideoproductions.tumblr.com/post/46603999144/drama-sighted-margot-cole-2011-synopsis-a Kids seem more prone to this misconception than adults so personally I don’t think it effects employee interactions or hiring practices much. I could be wrong.
