how to think outside the box to find fun activities for kids with cerebral palsy?

I don’t know if it’s me, or if others feel this way too. But, I feel like society’s perception is that people with disabilities can’t have fun!. why is this a thing in peoples heads I will never know in this post I want to discuss a few things to remember when you have a child in your life with cerebral palsy

it is important to remember as teachers and parents that despite having a disability like cerebral palsy that these children are just that children they may just get around differently

I feel the need to say this to say this and I feel like it shouldnt but well meaning adults would try and encourage my peers and classmates to spend time with me i am not sure how nessary this arrangement was because when i was older and didnt have others helping i still managed to make friends that being said I do see huge value in educating kids about disabilities kids are resourceful and left to their own devices will find ways to include kids with disabilities if they have understood the best approach I have seen is to arm the child with cerebral palsy with age appriote information that allows there peers to ask questions and have the answer come directly from them trust me when I say this will work wonders for bridging the social gap

the point I am trying to make is let the kids be kids and make minor adjustments such as moving the fun from the floor to table to include everyone

Are you afraid of being lonely this winter? Here are some tips for staying social in snowy months, when you have a disability

I think it’s safe to say, that we have all experienced loneliness at one time or another throughout life I also feel that winter and a snowy climate can be a limitation to one’s mobility and can lead to social isolation if you aren’t careful. in this post, i have some creative ways to help with this that I have used in my own life over time. I want to say that obviously weather isn’t the only cause of social isolation nor is it only something that impacts people with disabilities the reality is, it affects us all disability or not, but because I have a disability I am going to take that angle for this post.

Before I delve any deeper I want to clarify how I am defining the terms social isolation and loneliness for the sake of today’s post

What is social isolation

Social isolation is literally cutting yourself off from or being cut off from social experiences

what is loneliness

Loneliness is the feeling of being socially isolated and can occur even if you are in a crowd

I would like to start by asking a question of all of us, myself included are you feeling lonely or socially isolated? Once you have that you are, and which ones you can take steps to resolve this for yourself I also want to note that a lack of awareness from others they may not be aware of your needs nor how to support you within those needs

Others around you are wanting to spend time with you the reality is they may not know how because they aren’t sure how to overcome the barrier of disabilities but don’t worry its stuff that you do naturally day to day

You and your friends need to think outside the box maybe instead of going out somewhere perhaps you get together for a game or movie night or just get together at one another’s houses

The reality there will times when physically having company over or going out or friends are busy with their own lives, but you still want to be social with like-minded people who perhaps share your disability and perhaps  have resources and information that could be helpful to you

There is a website that I love and have loved for years now, and that is ability online. It is a social community for families and youth with disabilities or illness, it was started by a Toronto pediatric psychologist in the early 90s and is monitored by a group of volunteer

Ask your team to point you in the direction of groups interacting with like-minded people both as parents and youth can be invaluable

Let others know how they can support you and a lot of times the will they simply may be unsure as to how

I hope you have found these tips help in some way and if you haven’t given these a try I encourage you to try one and see what you think. I am also wondering how you manage to stay social in winter let me know in the comments below?
